Supabase is built on PostgreSQL, the most mature and flexible database engine around: standard SQL, proper relations, triggers and native Row Level Security. Firebase is NoSQL, which constrains business modelling. We build on Supabase for clients, and our own infrastructure runs on self-hosted Postgres on a private server in Europe: the same engine without the platform. Depending on the project we will tell you which one is justified, and a fully custom backend only makes sense once your needs outgrow what both of these cover.
